Thornless Boysenberry
Thornless Boysenberry is a vigorous, productive bramble prized for its exceptionally large, juicy berries and rich, complex flavor. A unique blackberry–raspberry–loganberry hybrid, boysenberries combine the deep berry flavor of a blackberry with the sweetness and delicate texture of raspberries.
The large, dark purple berries have a distinctive sweet-tart flavor that makes them especially enjoyable fresh, while also being excellent for pies, cobblers, jams, preserves, syrups, and freezing. The thornless canes make harvesting and maintenance much easier, making this variety an excellent choice for home gardens, family orchards, and pick-your-own plantings.
Boysenberries have a vigorous, trailing growth habit and perform best when grown on a trellis or other sturdy support. With proper care, established plants can produce generous crops of flavorful fruit during the summer harvest season.

Watering
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development. Provide approximately 1–2 inches of water per week, adjusting as needed during hot or dry weather. Deep watering once or twice weekly is generally better than frequent, shallow watering. Avoid standing water, as boysenberries perform best in well-drained soil.
Sunlight
Plant boysenberries in full sun for the best berry size, sweetness, and overall production. A minimum of 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day is recommended. Partial shade can be tolerated, but reduced sunlight may result in less fruit and slower ripening.
Fertilizing
Boysenberries benefit from regular, moderate fertilization to support vigorous cane growth and fruit production.

Early Spring (as new growth begins): Apply a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 at approximately ½ cup per established plant, keeping fertilizer several inches away from the crown. Water thoroughly after application.

Late Spring to Early Summer: A second light application may be made after flowering to support fruit development and continued cane growth.
Compost or well-aged manure can also be incorporated into the soil. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth while reducing fruit production.
Pruning
Boysenberries produce fruit on second-year canes (floricanes), so proper pruning is important for maintaining healthy plants and reliable production.
During the growing season, allow new canes (primocanes) to develop and train them along a sturdy trellis or support. Once the current season's fruiting is complete, remove the canes that produced fruit by cutting them back to the base.
Thin out weak, damaged, or overcrowded canes to improve airflow and light penetration. Long new canes can be trained along the trellis during the growing season rather than allowing them to trail along the ground.
Harvesting
Boysenberries typically ripen during the summer, with harvest beginning as the berries develop their characteristic deep purple to nearly black color.
Pick berries when they are fully colored, plump, juicy, and detach easily with a gentle pull. Boysenberries are delicate when fully ripe, so handle them carefully and harvest frequently during peak season.
Fresh berries are delicious eaten straight from the plant and are also excellent for pies, cobblers, jams, preserves, syrups, smoothies, and freezing.
For the best flavor, allow berries to fully ripen on the plant before harvesting.
Propagation
Boysenberries can be propagated through tip layering, a simple method that works particularly well with their long, flexible canes.
Tip layering:

Select a healthy, flexible cane during the growing season.

Bend the tip down to the soil and bury approximately 2–3 inches of the tip.

Keep the soil consistently moist while roots develop.

Once well-rooted, cut the new plant free from the parent cane and transplant it to its permanent location.
