Ouachita Thornless Blackberry

Ouachita is a high-yielding, thornless blackberry variety known for its large, firm, and glossy black berries with a rich, sweet flavor. This vigorous plant produces abundant fruit on semi-erect canes, making it ideal for home gardens, pick-your-own farms, and small-scale commercial production.

Ouachita’s canes are strong and erect, making a trellis unneccesary. It thrives in a wide range of climates, tolerates heat well, and demonstrates excellent disease resistance, particularly against anthracnose and cane blight.

The berries are perfect for fresh eating, freezing, baking, or making jams and preserves. With a reliable mid- to late-summer harvest, Ouachita is valued for its consistent yields, ease of management, and outstanding fruit quality.

Mature Size: 5–6 ft. tall canes
Spacing: 3–5 ft. apart
Harvest Season: Mid to late summer
Growth Habit: Semi-erect, thornless canes

Growing Information

USDA Hardiness Zones: 5–9
Sun Exposure: Full sun preferred (6–8+ hours daily); tolerates light partial sun
Soil Type: Well-drained, loamy soil
Soil pH: Slightly acidic (ideal range 6.0–6.8)

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruit development. Provide about 1–2 inches of water per week. Water deeply once or twice weekly rather than frequent shallow watering. Avoid standing water, as blackberries do not tolerate soggy soil.

Sunlight

Full sun ensures the best berry size, sweetness, and yield, while also reducing disease pressure and promoting even fruit ripening. Partial sun is tolerated but may reduce productivity.

Fertilizing

Encourage vigorous growth and heavy fruiting with targeted fertilization:

  • Early Spring (as new growth begins): Apply a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 at ½ cup per plant, spread 12–18 inches from the crown, and water thoroughly.

  • Late Spring to Early Summer (after flowering): Apply ¼–½ cup per plant to support fruit development and strong cane growth for the next season.

Compost or well-aged manure can also be used. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that promote leafy growth at the expense of fruit.

Pruning

Ouachita produces fruit on second-year canes (floricanes).

  • During the growing season, tip first-year canes (primocanes) at 3–4 ft to encourage lateral branching.

  • After harvest, remove fruited canes by cutting at ground level.

  • In late winter, trim lateral branches to 12–18 inches.

  • Remove weak, damaged, or overcrowded canes to improve airflow and light penetration.

Tipping refers to cutting off the top 1–2 inches of a young cane to stimulate side branch growth, which increases fruit production and improves manageability.

Harvesting

Berries typically begin ripening in mid to late summer. Mature plants can produce up to 5–10 pounds of fruit per season under optimal conditions.

Pick berries when fully black, plump, and easily detachable with a gentle pull. Harvest every few days during peak season. Refrigerate immediately and use within several days, or preserve by freezing, canning, or making jams.

Propagation

Ouachita can be propagated by tip layering or root cuttings.

Tip layering:

  1. Select a long, flexible cane in late summer.

  2. Bend the tip down to the soil surface and bury 2–3 inches deep, leaving the rest attached.

  3. Keep soil moist until roots develop.

  4. Cut rooted plant free from parent cane and transplant.

Root cuttings:

  1. During dormancy, dig a healthy root about pencil-thick.

  2. Cut into 2–4 inch sections.

  3. Plant horizontally in well-drained soil and cover with ~1 inch of soil.

  4. Keep lightly moist until shoots emerge, then transplant once established.

Plant Quality

Our Ouachita Thornless Blackberry plants are propagated from tissue culture stock, ensuring uniform plants with reduced disease risk and strong, vigorous growth from the start.
